Sweatcoin presented several complex challenges that required innovative solutions
The app’s primary function—converting steps into a digital currency—involved handling a large volume of microtransactions. Each step taken by users had to be recorded and converted into Sweatcoins in real time, ensuring data accuracy and preventing fraud. This required integrating blockchain technology for secure and immutable transaction records.
As Sweatcoin’s user base grew exponentially, the app needed a backend infrastructure capable of scaling to accommodate millions of daily users, all generating transactions simultaneously. This required a dynamic cloud-based architecture to ensure smooth user experiences during peak usage periods.
One of the critical challenges for Sweatcoin was ensuring the accuracy of step data and preventing fraud (e.g., users attempting to manipulate the system by simulating steps). The platform needed a robust algorithm to verify the authenticity of steps and maintain data integrity across the system.

We integrated a private blockchain network to handle Sweatcoin transactions. This provided an immutable ledger to track each user’s steps and currency generation, ensuring that the conversion of steps to Sweatcoins was accurate, secure, and verifiable. The blockchain also enabled Sweatcoin to ensure transparency and prevent tampering with transaction data.
Sweatcoin’s backend was migrated to a cloud-based architecture using Google Cloud Platform (GCP). We implemented Kubernetes clusters to manage and auto-scale the microservices architecture, which enabled the platform to handle millions of concurrent users without downtime. This ensured that the platform remained responsive and efficient during high traffic periods.
To combat step-count manipulation, we developed AI-powered algorithms that analyzed patterns in user activity to detect abnormal behaviors. These algorithms flagged and prevented fraudulent step counts, ensuring that only legitimate steps were converted into Sweatcoins. The fraud prevention system was continuously trained using machine learning to adapt to new tactics.
The mobile app was optimized to deliver a seamless experience even with intermittent internet connectivity. We began by integrating a permissioned blockchain, using Hyperledger Fabric to track each step-to-Sweatcoin conversion. We also developed a smart contract mechanism to automate the conversion of steps into Sweatcoins based on pre-defined thresholds.
The backend was migrated to Google Cloud Platform (GCP), with Kubernetes orchestrating the microservices architecture. This allowed Sweatcoin’s services—such as transaction handling, user authentication, and step verification—to be containerized and independently scaled as demand fluctuated. The auto-scaling feature ensured the platform could support millions of transactions daily without performance degradation.
Our team developed a machine learning model trained to detect fraudulent activity patterns. This system analyzed metrics such as step velocity, timing irregularities, and device movement patterns to identify possible instances of fraud. When a pattern was flagged as suspicious, the algorithm would halt the step-to-Sweatcoin conversion until further verification.
We optimized the mobile app for performance using React Native for cross-platform development, ensuring consistency between iOS and Android versions. We also implemented data synchronization mechanisms that allowed users to track steps offline and sync with the cloud as soon as connectivity was restored. The app’s lightweight design minimized battery usage, which was a critical factor for user retention.
We set up CI/CD pipelines for Sweatcoin, enabling rapid iteration and deployment of new features, security patches, and performance optimizations.
